Our group meets twice a week for a refreshing dip in the cold waters of Portobello, with a social aspect to the experience. Before the dip, we usually gather up to 30 minutes early to catch up with each other, and then head down to the beach at a designated time. The beach serves as our changing room, and we wait for each other to arrive so that we can take a group photo (optional) and enter the water together as a supportive group. You are welcome to spend as much time as you like in the water; there's no competition or pressure. Please be sure to read our safety advice before dipping with us. After the dip, we quickly change into warm clothes and enjoy a hot drink. To add to the social element, we head for a meet up The Porty Tap on Thursdays, and on Sunday mornings, we all gather around The Little Green van for a hot drink and a pastry.

In addition to our twice-weekly dips, we also organize a 5K every Monday night, open to runners, joggers, walkers, and even dogs! There's no need to worry about competition, as everyone is a winner just for showing up. It's a great opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air, and meet other members of our community.

Why we do it

Dipping is the common denominator in the group but defiantly not the most important aspect. Of course there are loads of benefits from cold water dipping. It boosts your immune system, it improves your circulation, It increases your libido, burns calories, and It reduces stress and most importantly it is a great way of socialising and making new friends.

There is a great sense of support, community and camaraderie amongst the Edinburgh Blue Balls. Leave your ego at the door, come down for a dip and meet some new people. To have a group of men, who do not give a fuck about your sexuality, your job, your body shape or clothes - everyone is just there for some good company. After the group photo and going into the water as one - You can usually hear a bit of swearing and some high pitched yelps as we all enter the water. This way everyone forgets about past, present and future anxieties and you are completely in the moment. Surprisingly easy to get into a cold body of water as part of a group knowing the only thing on everyones mind is how are you going to get your balls in the freezing water. This is where you will find yourself talking to complete random strangers about everything and nothing and mostly about how bloody cold it is. You meet different people each week and make some beautiful connections. Spend as much time in the water as you want there is no competition - always read our safety advice before dipping with us. You can be as open as you want during the swim sometimes it is so cold you have no idea what you are talking about but given time you will make connections, make new friends. We have chat groups for a bit more banter and support online if needed. There is also quite a few socials with wild swimming and camping trips, outdoor spa breaks and socials.

Where we do it

Check Edinburgh Blue Balls Facebook events page for updates every Monday.

Wednesday 7.30pm Longniddry Car park 1 (Summer only)

Thursday 6.30pm John street Portobello. 7.30pm in Summer.

Sunday 9.30am John street Portobello

Once you have been to a few dips, join some of the online socials and you can always post up if you need a swim buddy. Lot more smaller dips organised between members.

What we wear

Anything you want, most of the group use “swimming skins' which simply means wearing normal swimwear. Budgy smugglers has caught on within the group. Some guys wear shorts, some wet suits - there is no judgement. Neoprene socks and gloves highly recommended for winter dips.

What we don’t do

This is a free and non profit weekly event - these dips are ‘social dips’ which means that we do not provide safety cover or insurance of those taking part.

All participants are responsible for their own safety and go in the water at their own risk.

What to bring

Swim shorts, wetsuit or brave the speedos.

Neoprene socks and gloves makes a huge difference to skin swimming.

Dry robe or dressing gown to dry off - something easy to change under.

Change matt or something to place on the sand to get changed on.

A hat to keep your head warm in the water.

Warm clothing to layer up with afterwards,

A tow float, whistle and a night light or head torch.

Hot drink in flask or thermos mug .

Hot water bottle to warm up after.

Breathwork

Pre swim breath-work can help (4 seconds inhale, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds exhale, repeated for 1-3 mins)

In the water, simple natural controlled in/out breaths (no breath hold) with the emphasis on the exhale will help keep you settled

Listen to your body, it’s not a competition to see how long you can stay in, one day you can be in for ten minutes, the next it could be two minutes, if you start shivering too much or struggling in any way, get out.

Cold water safety

After-drop is real – and how to deal with it.

If you have spent any time hanging around open water swimmers you may have heard the term “after-drop”. If you’ve done any swimming in cool water, you may have experienced it. For the uninitiated, after-drop refers to the decline in your core body temperature after you have got out of the water.

When you swim in cool water the body cleverly tries to protect vital organs by reducing blood flow to the skin and limbs. Thus the core stays warm while the skin, arms and legs cool down. The process is known as peripheral vasoconstriction.

Shortly after you exit the water, peripheral vasoconstriction ends. Cold blood from your limbs and skin returns to your core where it mixes with warmer blood thereby causing your deep body temperature to drop, even if you’re warmly dressed and move into a warm environment. This is why you often only start shivering 10 to 15 minutes after leaving the water.

It’s a good theory, but can it really be true that your core temperature keeps falling for quite some time after finishing swimming? (& Dipping)

What to do about it:

Get dressed quickly and warmly. Immediately after swimming you may feel great as the cooled blood has not yet returned to your core. Best to wrap up warmly before it does. It’s much harder to dress when you’re shivering.

Don’t take a hot shower as this will increase the rate at which cooled blood returns to the core and makes the drop faster and deeper. Cold water swimmers have been known to faint in hot showers. Wait until you’ve warmed up again before showering.

Don’t attempt to drive or ride a bike until your core temperature has recovered. Driving and shivering is not a good combination. If your core temperature drops too much and you become hypothermic it can also affect your cognitive abilities. Again, not good for driving.

Drink something hot and eat something. Shivering is a highly energy consumptive bodily function. You need to fuel it.

Keep an eye on your fellow swimmers. Someone who appears completely fine getting out of the water may be in trouble 10 minutes later and may need your help.

Get out of the water before you get too cold as you will continue to get colder after swimming – give your body a margin of safety.

"After experiencing some difficulties with my mental health and struggling to find a sense of belonging, I founded the Edinburgh Blue Balls in September 2021. Having observed women's groups enjoying sociable dips and beach fires, I couldn't help but notice that men who swam in Portobello were often on their own. I disliked the idea of large groups and competitive "alpha male" behaviour, so I sought to create a community where I could be myself and connect with like-minded individuals who valued openness, inclusivity and supportiveness. For me, the Edinburgh Blue Balls represents a space that is social, fun, and organic, offering men a unique opportunity to find the kind of support that is often hard to come by, especially from other
